Suggested Boil Order Precautions
12/3/2024
Suggest precautions to follow during a boil water order to ensure safety:
For Drinking and Cooking
- Boil Water: Boil all tap water for at least one minute (three minutes at higher altitudes) before drinking, cooking, or using it for food preparation.
- Use Bottled Water: If available, use bottled water for drinking and cooking instead of boiling.
For Hygiene
- Brushing Teeth: Use boiled or bottled water.
- Bathing: It is generally safe for adults to bathe or shower, but avoid swallowing water. For infants or small children, consider sponge baths to reduce the risk.
For Cleaning and Washing
- Dishwashing: Use boiled water or a dishwasher on a hot cycle with a sanitizing option.
- Handwashing: Wash hands with soap and water, followed by a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
- Food Prep: Rinse fresh produce with boiled or bottled water.
Other Uses
- Ice: Discard any ice made with untreated tap water. Make new ice with boiled or bottled water.
- Pets: Provide boiled or bottled water for pets.
When the Order is Lifted
- Flush household pipes, faucets, and appliances by running cold water for at least 5 minutes.
- Change refrigerator filters, water filters, and water softeners.
- Follow any specific instructions from local authorities.
